Maintaining and Servicing Your Trailer
Aluminium trailers are known for their durability, corrosion resistance, and lightweight construction. With proper maintenance and regular servicing, your aluminium trailer can provide years of reliable performance—even in harsh environments like coastal areas or marine use. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you care for your aluminium trailer and whether you're towing boats, bikes, or equipment, following these maintenance tips will keep your trailer safe, reliable, and looking great for years to come.
1. Regular Cleaning
Aluminium may not rust like steel, but it still needs cleaning around dissimilar metals, especially when exposed to saltwater or road grime.
-
Rinse after use – Especially after launching boats or driving on salted roads, rinse the trailer thoroughly with fresh water.
-
Use mild detergent – Wash with a soft brush and pH-neutral soap to remove grime, salt, and debris.
-
Avoid harsh chemicals – Acidic cleaners and abrasive tools can damage the aluminium surface.
-
After cleaning- Apply a Lanolin spray to any steel components and at dissimilar metal areas.
2. Inspect
-
Check high-stress areas – Look at joints, corners, and load-bearing points regularly.
-
Inspect after rough use – If you've carried a heavy load or travelled off-road, inspect more thoroughly.
3. Bolt and Fastener Maintenance
Most aluminium trailers, like Hybrid Trailers, are bolted together rather than welded—offering easier serviceability.
-
Check bolt tightness – Periodically tighten all bolts, especially before long trips or heavy usage.
-
Watch for corrosion – Although aluminium resists rust, galvanised bolts and brackets should still be inspected for surface rust or corrosion.
-
Replace worn hardware – If nuts, bolts, or brackets show wear or corrosion, replace them promptly to maintain structural integrity.
4. Suspension and Brakes
Like any trailer, your aluminium trailer’s suspension and braking systems need attention.
-
Inspect springs and bushings – Check leaf springs, torsion arms, and suspension components for wear or damage.
-
Brake servicing – Clean and adjust electric or hydraulic brakes regularly. Replace worn pads or shoes.
-
Wheel bearings – Grease bearings every 6–12 months or more frequently in marine environments.
5. Tyre Maintenance
Proper tyre care not only extends lifespan but also ensures safety on the road.
-
Check pressure regularly – Inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
-
Inspect for wear – Uneven tread may indicate alignment or suspension issues.
-
Rotate if necessary – Especially on multi-axle trailers, rotating tyres can extend their life.
6. Lighting and Electrical
Keep your trailer legal and visible on the road.
-
Check all lights – Test brake, indicator, tail, and number plate lights before every trip.
-
Inspect wiring – Look for exposed or frayed wires, especially near connectors or moving parts.
-
Waterproof connections – Use dielectric grease and sealed connectors to prevent corrosion in marine conditions.
7. Storage Tips
Proper storage can significantly extend the life of your aluminium trailer.
-
Store under cover – Keep the trailer in a shed or under a carport when not in use to protect from UV and rain.
-
Use wheel chocks – Prevent movement and relieve strain on the braking system.
-
Jack up during long-term storage – Lifting the trailer off the tyres prevents flat spots and bearing pressure.
8. Professional Servicing
Even with good DIY care, regular professional inspections are recommended.
-
Annual service – Have a trailer specialist inspect the brakes, bearings, suspension, and structural integrity annually.
-
Compliance checks – Ensure the trailer remains compliant with safety and roadworthy standards.
